The yearly report

So 2010 ends today. It’s been a super busy year, with lots of challenges, but full of accomplishments too. As usual, here are the highlights of it:

  • January: Attempted to run 100 miles at the Valenciana 100 but ended up running 50 miles and meeting a couple of great new friends. Started a new job at Synacor. Was accepted to run the UTMB in August. Enjoyed an extremely snowy Winter climbing Iztaccíhuatl a couple of times.
  • February: Climbed a totally different Nevado de Toluca in full alpine conditions. Headbanged with Odi & Octavio at another of Cannibal Corpse’s brutal shows.
  • March: Beto & I had fun while traveling to Chihuahua and running the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon with a bunch of tarahumaras & gringos locos. Finally migrated this blog from Blogger to WordPress.
  • April: Witnessed snow meltdown in Iztaccíhuatl. Enjoyed the last bits of snow and took Mokka to her first race at Nevado de Toluca. Visited Synacor’s office in Buffalo and ate tons of hot chicken wings along the way.
  • May: Started uphill training for the UTMB by mixing routes at Nevado de Toluca. Broke the little toe in my left foot while running barefoot a technical trail in my Vibram FiveFingers, forcing me to cross-train and travel to the Bay Area with my foot inside a cast.
  • June: Toured Yosemite with Odi, Gina & Güero, destroying the foot cast along the way. Welcomed Summer and continued healing of my left foot with a quick climb of Iztaccíhuatl.
  • July: Odi & I celebrated our 1st year as a couple with a great day touring Tepoztlán. Beto & Lula got married and the celebration was big. Ran with friends the Maratón Rover Scout “México-Cuernavaca” and officially got back to mountain racing.
  • August: Had my last long trainings at Iztaccíhuatl, in preparation for the UTMB. Traveled to France and tapered for the UTMB by hanging around Chamonix. Managed to run, enjoy and finish the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc after a lot of unexpected situations during the race.
  • September: Enjoyed a few days in the alpine after my run in the UTMB, then said goodbye (for this year) to the Mont-Blanc with a bunch of mixed emotions. Crawled the last 12 kilometers of Mexico City’s marathon after a strong and steady run of its first 30 kilometers. Had a fun stormy weekend with friends at Poncho’s bachelor party in Playa del Carmen.
  • October: Attended to awesome gigs by The Cranberries and Hypocrisy with Odi & Octavio respectively. Attempted to get back to trad climbing while teaching Odi the tools of the trade. Poncho & Vane got married. Went back to Buffalo to enjoy more tasty chicken wings and to have a great time with work colleagues.
  • November: Odi & I had a great weekend visiting Beto & Lula in Morelia, with Beto & I running a challenging-but-beautiful new course along its southern sierra. I was bummed of not being able to break my personal record at Skyrace Malinche, had a brief running depression afterwards.
  • December: Odi finished college with honors and as 1st place of her class! Had 2 great weekends running at Iztaccíhuatl with friends, first at El Doblete then at Skymarathon Iztaccíhuatl. Enjoyed 3 days working, running and relaxing in Coatepec.

For 2011, I look forward to more exciting challenges, new people to meet, fun projects, lots of travel and a bunch dreams to accomplish. But most of all, I wish you all a year full of peace & love!

A week after…

Yesterday morning we completed the 2nd part of El Doblete. We had a fun morning running the 21-km course of Skymarathon Iztaccíhuatl and I was able to break my best time from 2007 by almost 3 minutes, logging a total of 4:20:29.

I felt in good shape despite of not being in regular training. I think my training sessions for the UTMB during the Summer are still paying off. As always, we celebrated with some beers and lots food the great running year

El Doblete

Most of the running gang got together yesterday to enjoy a beautiful day of mountain running at Iztaccíhuatl. El Doblete is the name for a running challenge which consists of doing the strenuous 12-km route from the little town of San Rafael to Chalchoapan hut and back (24 km roundtrip), then the classic 21.5-km Skymarathon Iztaccíhuatl a week after.

Even though I have planned to run the 1st part of the challenge in previous years, something had always happened which prevented me to do so. The course is really strenuous, with a total ascent of 2,000 meters and the same for descent, between an altitude of 2,700 to 4,600 meters. I logged a total time of 6 hours 38 minutes and enjoyed every bit of it. After the race we celebrated with a big lunch and some beers
