Mountain racing

So 2 days ago I was seduced by the idea of joining another mountain race, the guilty one: my friend Luis.

Early today Nahila, Wendolyn, Luis and I joined the usual crazy crowd of the Solo Para Salvajes racing circuit. Lots of friendly familiar faces were all around the place.

The starting gun for Camino Largo y Sinuoso was fired at 9:30 a.m. and we left El Zarco heading towards Contreras. The race course takes most of Desierto de los Leones’ main dirt road, passing along many beautiful places in the middle of the forest and climbing up to Cerro San Miguel, then going down to 4to Dínamo (a trad climbing area we visit a few times per year) and all the way back to El Zarco. Total distance for the roundtrip was 34 km with a total elevation gain of ~1,650 meters. A good endurance test!

Despite having restarted formal training about a month ago (when Mokka started to run), I felt relatively comfortable with the run, trying to avoid an excessive effort and focusing on saving energy and enjoying the trail. I logged a total time of 4:56:44 and arrived to the finish line with a big smile in my face, just ready to celebrate with a tasty lunch with all of my friends. I love this races

Playing

Spent the afternoon visiting Poli & Javi at my aunt Susana’s place. It is the 2nd time I see Javi, who is only 4 months old and who I 1st met last Sunday, so I obviously had a great time playing with him. I love my nephew

Mokka goes mountaineering

Mokka got 6-months old today. I wanted to celebrate this with something special so Serch, Alfredo and I took her to Nevado de Toluca for her 1st mountaineering experience. We did our favorite route at the mountain, the loop around the crater’s rim.

The climb went really well, even though we had to aid her to get across some rock scrambling sections (she’s not tall enough yet for long jumps). The altitude hit on her as she started to look really tired & sleepy just before reaching the summit. When we started the descent into the crater, her paws hurt so much from rock scrambling that she stopped for rest at every possible opportunity. Once we arrived to one of the lagoons, she didn’t hesitated to jump into the cold water. She seemed to recover almost instantly and everything was joy.

While we climbed up the lowest side of the crater to get back to the car, we were struck by a sleet storm. Once at the Jeep, she jumped onto the rear seat and cuddled in my legs to beg for a hug while I wore my down jacket, she was soaking wet and freezing. Poor little puppy, she just had enough for the day… She slept for most of the drive back home but, every time she woke up and stared at us, there was ‘that’ look in her eyes which let you know she just had an awesome experience!

A walk with the dogs

Lula, Beto and I took out the dogs for a long walk to Villa Alpina. We spent most of the morning on a 10+ km hike and it was really fun to see how the dogs enjoyed the trip, each one on its own different way…

Once back at the cars, we dropped the dogs back at home and headed for a huge lunch at some mexican food restaurant in Tlalnepantla’s downtown.

All of the pictures can be seen here.

History of the browser user-agent string

This one really made me laugh

In the beginning there was NCSA Mosaic, and Mosaic called itself NCSA_Mosaic/2.0 (Windows 3.1), and Mosaic displayed pictures along with text, and there was much rejoicing…

Sunday fun

Mokka had her 2nd run this morning. This time Beto joined us and we drove all the way across the city to the University campus.

We did a little bit longer run of almost 5 km along my usual training course. Mokka seemed to enjoy the “game” once again, however, I think she imagined it would be of the same duration as 3 days ago. The last couple of kilometers she went into “follow” mode, being able to finish the run but really tired. She drank a full liter of water after it.

We went for a coffee to Coyoacán and had a fun time as always. Mokka stayed calm for the rest of the trip, not sad, only truly exhausted. We’re going to stick with 3-5 km runs until she builds out enough endurance to finish such distance in a better shape.

Mokka’s 1st run

I took out Mokka for her 1st “formal” run today. We ran a short 3 km course around the neighborhood and, as you can imagine, still being a puppy at almost 6 months old, she was really excited about the sudden change of pace in her regular outing.

Of course her excitement didn’t last for long, after 1 km of non-stop running, she quit biting the leash (like most dogs with “a character”, she thinks that the lead is hers while she does that) and started focusing on looking on the road ahead and going by my side rather than jumping all around.

Then, by the 2nd kilometer, she started to slow down and continuously looked at me as if asking if that “game” was going to end soon. It was really funny to look at her face, so full of concern

We stopped at the same place where we started and she seemed really relieved of the fact. She was tired but kind of excited about the new “game” we just played. We quietly walked back home not without the usual visit to her dog friends along the street.
