The next adventure

Escapar del tiempo y vivir sin miedo
contemplar la vida y sus misterios
escuchar el silencio y perderme dentro
encontrar respuestas del susurro del viento…

So here it is, the time has come. Tomorrow I will fly to Texas to embark on a 30-hour (or hopefully less) adventure at the Rocky Raccoon 100 mile Trail Run.

It’s my first attempt at running 100 miles (160 km) and I am very excited about it. It has been months of training and it’s time to live the dream to its fullest.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me words of encouragement and reflection, and also to those who have supported my (sometimes non-sense) training schedule. I love you all.

Run like the wind, flow… and come back in one piece…

See you next week!

Fingertip torture

No running or mountaineering this weekend. Rest for the legs (and the body) is what taper is all about.

Judith and I did some old-school bouldering traverses in Filosofía’s wall. It’s been months of rock climbing inactivity. After that, we went to Espacio Escultórico to complete the unavoidable process of skin destruction and later to Coyoacán so we could cry some tears while holding cups of very hot mocha.

I know, we are such a pair of masochists…

Cheap softwarez

Haha, more silly stuff. Found a link to this just above the fine print in the entry form for the Ultra Badass Slam:

Actually this is supposed to be a virus, but I am a n00b hack3r so I am not very good at programming. Please forward this message to everyone in your address book and delete all your files. Thx in advance.

Bio Personals

I’ve been single-stranded too long! Lonely ATGCATG would like to pair up with congenial TACGTAC.

Menage a trois! Ligand seeks two receptors into binding and mutual phosphorylation. Let’s get together and transduce some signals.

Some dates have called me a promotor. Others have referred to me as a real operator. Personally, I think I’m just a cute piece of DNA who is still looking for that special transcription factor to help me unwind.

Highly sensitive, orally active small molecule seeks stable well-structured receptor who knows size isn’t everything.

There must be a rational way to meet a date! I’m tired of hanging out in those molecular diversity bars, hoping to randomly bump into the right peptide. I want a molecule that will fit right into my active site and really turn me on. I’ll send you my crystal structure if you send me yours!

Gene therapy graduate. After years of producing nothing but gibberish, I’ve shed my exons and am ready to express my introns. All I need is a cute vector to introduce me to the right host.

My RNA, I’m sorry I misread your UAAUAAUAA and inserted three tyrosines when you repeatedly asked me to stop. Something got lost in the translation. Please forgive me.

Naked DNA with sticky ends seeks kanamycin-resistant plasmid. EcoR1 sites preferred.

Uninhibited virus seeks reason to make me shed my coat protein.

This very selective oliogonucleotide has been probing for just the right target for long term hybridization.

Mature cell seeks same who still enjoys cycling and won’t go apoptotic on me. Let’s fight senescence together!

I’m a prolific progenitor with great potential for growth and self-renewal. Call me if you’re a potent hematopoietic factor who still believes in endless nights of colony stimulation.

I don’t always express myself on the surface, but I’m looking for a signal that you appreciate my complexity. Send me the right message that will penetrate my membranes, turn on my protein expression and release my potential energy.

Happy Biologist’s Day!

Short laps

Still on taper: ran 12 laps at Sope‘s short and flat course after work. Logged 10 km in total, enjoyed the beautiful moon despite the crowds.

Frozen

After my quick 12 km morning run near home, Judith and I went back to the mountain this Saturday. This time we opted to climb Iztaccíhuatl since she hadn’t climbed it before and also because I’m in some sort of taper mode (yeah, sure…).

We arrived in the afternoon and spent the night in Altzomoni station. We woke up at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, had some quick breakfast and drove to La Joya to start walking by 5:30 a.m.; the weather was very cold (-10°C) and cloudy.

Around 7 a.m. the clouds dissipated a little bit and the sun started to warm up the place. It was just in time for us to walk across the shortcut between La Guglia and Cruz de Rosas. Every rock in the mountain was completely frozen, it was one of those very cold days.

After a short time we passed along Ayoloco hut and followed on to the glacier, we had such a steady pace despite the cold. The glacier had melted a little bit more than it was a month ago, so we had to be more careful while scrambling through its lower ice funnels. After that, everything was joy once we were high up the glacier because of the beautiful cloudy but shiny landscape.

We got to the summit by 12 p.m., Judith was more than happy because of her first time there, I was happy because of the quick & safe ascent. We shot a couple of pics, drank some water, ate some cereal bars and went down the mountain as fast as possible. By 4 p.m. we were back in La Joya, ate some quesadillas and drove back home. It was another of those great weekends

The rest of the pictures are here.

Fear

I skipped lunch today and went to Chiluca for a bit of bouldering.

After 3 laps in the main cave, I felt I had enough strength for trying some moderate old-school problems at the small cave.

Truth is that I had it (the strength), what I didn’t realized was that I was lacking of confidence. Confidence enough for not looking down and shake while I got far away from the ground on a V0- highball problem.

Oh yeah, I almost kissed the floor when my short-but-exciting adventure ended

Run, walk, run, walk…

So today I had my last long run before the 3-weeks-close Rocky Raccoon 100 miler.

Judith joined me in my trip to Nevado de Toluca and while she did her 1st solo circumnavigation of its crater, I got my dose of training by running 40 exhausting kilometers of dirt road at around 4,000 meters of altitude.

It was an experience on its own; I managed to run twice up the mountain after a 7-hour effort that in the end became a weird & funny hallucino-trip at which I “saw” stones moving along the road.

Fortunately, Judith was already waiting for me when I arrived to the car. I remember asking her to take me down the mountain so I could eat some food and try to put my mind together. Sometimes training can be so harsh…
