Resting

After a couple of punches at Friday’s mosh pit and my latest running malaise, I arrived to Chicago for visiting Poli & Javier.

We’ve spent most of the day resting, eating, chatting and enjoying Chicago’s breeze & view from their apartment. In the afternoon, we went for a walk to the Navy Pier and then had dinner in downtown.

I’m starting to enjoy Chicago and psyching up for next Sunday’s big race.

Katatonia live

We had some really great time last night at Katatonia‘s concert at the lobby of Circo Volador.

I arrived just in time when the lights went off and in a matter of minutes, the band appeared on stage and psyched up the audience with the following setlist: Consternation, Ghost of the Sun, Wealth, My Twin, Don’t Tell a Soul, Future of Speech, Chrome, For My Demons, Sweet Nurse, Deadhouse, Teargas, Right into the Bliss, Cold Ways, Soil’s Song, Criminals and Evidence.

We sang, jumped, screamed and the response overall was so good that the band returned to the stage to play an encore with the following songs: July, Without God and Murder. The ovation was huge as well as the excitement in everyone.

At the end, we left the place with a big grin in our faces. This concert was a very expected one and Katatonia made it unforgettable

Here we go (again)

I just finished packing up my stuff for traveling tomorrow. I’m going to be out of Mexico for 2 weeks, my plans in general include (in no particular order): visiting Poli & Javier in Chicago, a “Platforms Hands-on Training” in Toronto and running 2 marathons with one week in between them.

Sounds like crazy thing, huh? I bet it is. I’ll tell you later how everything went… But now, I’m heading off to Katatonia’s concert at Circo Volador, looking forward to spend some great time in the mosh pit. See ya!

All in all is all we are…

So… resting my heels doesn’t mean my upper body has to rest too, right? (Yeah, I had some climbing this evening, my mood is better now)

Besides of that, I spent most of the day at home, doing almost nothing and watching TV. On the latter, I’ve just seen an episode of Six Feet Under (one of my favorite TV series), at which Nate’s funeral takes place. During the burial, Aunt Sarah reads aloud this poem from the Mystic Odes of Rumi, which I liked a lot:

Our death is our wedding with eternity.
What is the secret? “God is One.”
The sunlight splits when entering the windows of the house.
This multiplicity exists in the cluster of grapes;
It is not in the juice made from the grapes.
For he who is living in the Light of God,
The death of the carnal soul is a blessing.
Regarding him, say neither bad nor good,
For he is gone beyond the good and the bad.
Fix your eyes on God and do not talk about what is invisible,
So that he may place another look in your eyes.
It is in the vision of the physical eyes
That no invisible or secret thing exists.
But when the eye is turned toward the Light of God
What thing could remain hidden under such a Light?
Although all lights emanate from the Divine Light
Don’t call all these lights “the Light of God”;
It is the eternal light which is the Light of God,
The ephemeral light is an attribute of the body and the flesh.

…Oh God who gives the grace of vision!
The bird of vision is flying towards You with the wings of desire.

The ending credits couldn’t had better music than Nirvana’s All Apologies

And now, the left heel…

Hmm… more injuries. I’ve recovered from a twisted knee, just to get into plantar fasciitis. This is like a never ending curse…

Today I went with Miguel and Alfredo to Nevado de Toluca, they climbed the circumnavigation of the crater while I tried to run my 30 km high-altitude course, I ran only 20 of them. The pain in my left heel (which began a couple of days ago) started to increase with the distance and because of the uphill climb. I decided to stop before it went really bad.

Rest, rest, rest! That’s the only thing to do for now. Rest, medicine and re-attaching the ice packs to my legs. Who said exercise was good for your health?

PDF Processing with Perl

Adobe’s PDF has become a standard for text documents. Most office products can export their content into PDF. However, this software reaches its limits if you want advanced tasks such as combining different PDF documents into one single document or adding and adjusting the bookmarks panel for better navigation. Imagine that you want to collect all relevant Perl.com articles in one PDF file with an up-to-date bookmarks panel. You could use a tool like HTMLDOC, but adding article number 51 would require you to fetch articles one through 50 from the Web again. In most cases you would not be satisfied by the resulting bookmarks panel, either. This article shows how to use PDF::Reuse, by Lars Lundberg, for combining different PDF documents and adding bookmarks to them…

Pace recovering

I went back to the rabbit route today (during lunch time, you know…).

It seems like I’ve recovered my distance running pace. I was able to add 10 more km to the route by doing more laps in the Sope section and then in Polanco while catching Güero and Rubén at a restaurant.

I’m looking forward to a long run this weekend, so after that I can start recovering for the upcoming races.

Gravity sucks!

That was the verdict Cova and I gave today while bouldering at Chiluca’s cave. Many months have passed since we were into hard bouldering, obviously, we have lost most of the strength and flexibility we had on those days…

We tried to link some of our favorite problems, some of them with success, others without it. We tried, then tried again, and again… until it started to rain and we had to get out of the place. We agreed to do more pull-ups in our spare time

Social running?

With all the recent hype about “social” stuff like: social networking, social bookmarking, social this, social that… it seems like my activities for the weekend followed the same trend.

On Saturday, I ran 10 km along the heavily crowded Sope‘s course, in an unsuccessful effort to recover my distance running pace (it was unsuccessful because I kept running very fast). Accompanying me was Poli, who didn’t ran the course, but happens to be in Mexico for the weekend with 2 big news under her arm. The bad news: she’s not running Chicago marathon with me; the good news: she’s 7 weeks pregnant! Hooray!!

Today, Beto ran with me 6 of the 14 km that I logged at the also crowded Viveros de Coyoacán course. This time, I obeyed the alarm from my watch and managed to be comfortable while running at a conservative pace.

I still don’t know why I chose to train at crowded places during the weekend, but it seems like my mind needed to get comfortable with that. Marathons are races with lots of people you know…

Ultrarunning = ultrasleeping?

This morning, Mark Swanson posted the link to this article at the ULTRA mailing list:

When Jennifer Davis, my partner for long runs, was in college about 15 years ago, she had a real problem staying awake in her classes. The reason, she said, were those long, grueling workouts with the Dartmouth crew early in the day.

“Those are the only memories I have of totally falling asleep in lectures,” said Ms. Davis, a physical chemist living in Montgomery, N.J. “My notes from biology consist largely of squiggly lines meandering down the page of my notebook.”

It’s one of the mysteries of sleep: Why is it that mild exercise can be invigorating, but strenuous endurance exercise — whether it’s crew practice, long runs as training for a marathon or juggling back-to-back workouts to prepare for a triathlon — makes people groggy?…

Sleep After Hard Workouts? You Must Be Dreaming

Seems like I’m not the only one with this need-for-sleep disorder…
