"I believe that driving is more risky [than climbing]. The rock is never drunk, or on a cell-phone, or reaching into the back seat to smack a kid. Gravity is always there, of course, but it's not going 30mph at one time and driving a semi-truck at 80mph another."

Beautiful reward

I went to Nevado de Toluca for doing some altitude running. This morning in Mexico City the sky was so clear that it “almost” promised a beautiful day for being at the mountain. Wrong idea…

I drove all the way to the mountain and what in the morning seemed like beautiful day, by the time I arrived, it became a freezing hell. It was raining heavily and the winds were really strong; just like in a typical mountain storm. The weather was so cold and shitty that I didn’t have much time for warming up before running. Basically, I put on my jacket, MP3 player & camel bag and jumped out of the car and into the eye of the storm.

After a couple of seconds, I was soaking wet but my body began to get warm because of the sudden effort. The wind blows were as strong as in a “light rainy” day in Patagonia (really!). For some steps I couldn’t gain a single meter of distance, while at others I was really pushed forward (to almost falling); I was training in “full battle” mode. Approximately 1½ hours later I was back at the car, completely frozen, with my hands & feet numb and literally hiding away from the bad weather.

While I was changing clothes inside the car, Poncho appeared from the middle of the mist driving his car. He was “passing by the neighborhood” (as he said) and noticed that the weather was getting really worse, so he opted to leave as soon as he arrived. We barely talked for a couple of minutes and then he drove all the way down the mountain. I did the same a few minutes later.

Once I got down the mountain and out of the fiercy storm, my body began to recover its normal temp and I started to feel that cynical satisfaction of having accomplished a complete rountrip to the inside of the mountain’s crater in such bad weather conditions, but my great reward while driving back to the city was: the view of the beautiful landscape after that heavy storm
