The quest for big air

I spent today’s afternoon with Toche & Gil. We went to a hill near Chiluca to fly Gil’s new kite.

The wind wasn’t strong enough this evening, so the kites didn’t last in the air for too long. Nevertheless, I found an excellent spot on the other side of the hill where I could elevate the kite all the long of its cord (~100 meters). The wind was so good in there that I attached the kite to a tree and went to help Gil and María to bring the other kite to the place where I was

After 5 minutes of dangling with Gil’s kite while bringing it to my spot, we saw mine coming down from the sky, the wind was going to an end and the kite ended on the floor with its cable all over a bunch of big trees

I helped Gil to elevate his kite but the wind had gone and my excellent spot wasn’t excellent anymore. I began to rescue the fallen kite since the night was coming and the cord was still on the top of the trees. A few minutes later, the kite and its cord were down and we started to fold them for storing in their bags. Maybe another evening will be better for kite flying… even though this one was very fun!

A night with the mafia

Yesterday was Poncho’s birthday. The mafia got together to celebrate with some night gaming.

We went to play some Bingo. As always, we were condemned to stay in the working class of society: nobody won a single penny… except for Gil. As you may remember, Gil is well known for his good luck and stubborness. He decided to play risky and he won

After the casino, we went to a bar to have some drinks and to spend a nice moment celebrating Gil’s luck and Poncho’s birthday. Later, we headed to Caro & Gil’s apartment to eat some birthday cake

When things are OK…

It was very cloudy today. It seemed like it was going to rain when I went out to work. As I prepared my things for doing my job, I started to think about wild Patagonia. The day was perfect for some adventure…

My client did very well her part of the job: the water tank was totally empty. So I went down the house and let the water in, I needed a little bit of the liquid to do my job. When I got again to the water tank, I tried to close the water valve but it was so rotten that it broke in my hands. Yes, I had my small adventure explaining the problem to my client and the fact that we needed to get a new valve urgently

I fixed the valve in about 1 hour and after a full morning of work and clouds I returned home. Güero called and invited me to go bouldering to Chiluca, I accepted immediately. I also told Beto to meet us there.

We arrived there and each one started his own training routine. Soon after, Beto arrived and joined me in the quest for a hard boulder problem’s circuit. I showed him the new routes that I’ve been putting up with Cova, Mau, Juan and David.

I felt so inspired today that I managed to send most of the routes on the first try (even the scary one!). I felt very confident with Beto spotting me from the ground. We trained for nearly 2 hours and talked for 1 more hour. The weather remained like in wild South America and things were still OK for some adventure…

Turn off the light

Today Beto forgot his headlamp when we went for some nocturnal climbing to the usual place. I knew he was going to suffer a little bit, because I’ve been in the same situation a few times before…

He didn’t stop from doing his training despite the possibility of close encounters with scorpions, spiders or ants. He’s also a stubborn guy… After ½ lap I decided to be a good partner and turned off my headlamp. We finished the training very exhausted but ready to drink a cup of sweet and strong mocha coffee

Hyper-Threading Considered Harmful

Today was published an important Security Advisory for FreeBSD: FreeBSD-SA-05:09.htt. Colin Percival, a 23 year old FreeBSD security team member spent 3 months working on a security flaw that affects operating systems running on processors with Hyper-Threading technology.

Due to its security related nature, this issue has raised the attention of a big part of the community. Any operating system that can be run on this type of processors (*BSD, Linux, Windows) is exposed to it. This flaw permits local information disclosure, including allowing an unprivileged user to steal an RSA private key being used on the same machine. Administrators of multi-user systems are strongly advised to take action to disable Hyper-Threading immediately; single-user systems (i.e., desktop computers) are not affected.

For the complete report (including the technical paper about the issue), visit Colin’s website. At the moment, only FreeBSD has released a patch for this problem.

Wet socks

The rainy season is getting closer day by day. This afternoon, a delicious rain showered the city. As usual, I put on my running shoes, my shorts, my music and went out to get some mind cleaning.

The usual route, with some sprints to develop strenght and the long distance to keep the endurance. One hour after the show I returned home: body pain, wet socks and a big grin. The best way to cleanse your soul…

Buenos Aires feeling…

Mother’s day. Gina & Güero came to visit my mom and to eat with us. We missed a lot my dad who has been in Xico for 3 weeks in a row

I prepared some pasta, steaks and salad. We saw a movie and went out to buy tickets for the Star Wars opening. Güero invited us to dinner at an argentine restaurant. After a delicious bife de lomo I’ve got again this great sensation of strength in my forearms…

Like a fairy tale (w/ alcohol)

Yesterday’s evening was a very special one. Marijo & Wally’s wedding took place after 11 years of something between engagement and friendship…

The ceremony at the church was kind of long, but as I was shooting photographs, I could endure it till the end. After that, we went to the party at a club near Chiluca.

It was a very big party. There I met a lot of old friends that I haven’t seen since high school. It was kind of strange to see so many known people. After 7 or 8 years, I noticed that most of my old companions are very different from what they were (they really look very thrashed…), I’m happy to see that being an anormal person has kept me more conserved through the years (even they noticed it!)

Of course, we got drunk and had a very very very fun night. I almost cried when I saw Marijo so happy. After all, her dream of all life came true: she married her blue prince (metaphorically speaking… ). I wish them the best!

Racing against the schedule

I woke up early today. I agreed with Beto to go training very early since he had to start working at 9 o’clock and Gil was going to pick me up at my place by 11 a.m. (for going to Marijo & Wally’s wedding). As usual, Beto didn’t woke up and left me waiting until 7:40 a.m. (he was supposed to pick me up by 7) when I called to his cell phone and yelled a few things to him He tried to convince me to go to Chiluca as it is very close to our homes, but I told him that I still wanted to go to the university campus.

So I took my things and put them into the truck, went to the gas station and headed alone to the south of the city using a well-known shortcut. I arrived to Espacio Escultórico in 20 minutes!

I jumped the fence and put my shoes, chalkbag, backpack and music on. I started to do laps like a maniac. I climbed 1,200 meters in about 1 hour 10 minutes. Not a bad record, huh? When I finished training, my friends from the campus security were opening the place to the public. I said hello to them and jumped into the truck for heading back to the north. It took me 30 minutes to return home, just in time to take a bath and be ready for the party!

Find the differences…

Ion put up this funny parody of some friends. If there are some similarities with real life, it’s a mere coincidence…
