Roberto Rico Montiel (1953-2005)

This is a sad moment for me. I’ve received an email from the faculty which informs me that professor Roberto Rico has passed away.

I met “Maestro” Rico since my 1st semester at the university. Over the years, he taught me Geobiology, Evolution and Paleontology. He never got an university degree; despite that, he was a true guru on his field: fossil diatoms. He was well known all over the world because of his knowledge (he never needed a stinky title).

For 4 years we were companions at the Biology department in the faculty. We shared many memorable moments at the office: long talks about music, evolution, fossils and minerals. He was a very calm person, always making fun of life and death.

He got sick some years ago and his condition never got any better. Now he can laugh about me from “the other side”…

Thanks for sharing with me all of your knowledge Roberto, and most important: your friendship. Now you can rest in peace, I will miss you a lot

Done at last!

I did it. I finished the upgrade on my laptop. Now I have a very decent FreeBSD workstation with sound and wireless networking. The process took it’s time, but now I’m enjoying the fruits of paradise

I’ll post some screenshots later, when I get my files back in place. Until then…

Fallen myths

What kind of joke is this?! All of my life I assumed that lightsabers were made of some kind of laser, but nooo.

Now I know what they are made from and who manufactures them, I’m going to buy mine at the electrical shop!

PS. Well, even Darth Vader has his bad moments, hehehe

Almost finished

I finally installed FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE on my laptop. I CVSup‘d to the 5.3-STABLE branch and rebuilt “world”. Also, I wrapped my miniPCI wireless network adapter’s drivers with the NDISulator to get the card working. Now I can be wireless in my beloved FreeBSD environment!

Now the machine is recompiling every port I used to have before the upgrade. Getting up Perl, Apache, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, X.Org, KDE, Java, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, my bioinformatics tools and some other indispensable ports is a tedious task for my little friend, but it’s worth the effort.

I hope this torture doesn’t last too much…

I couldn’t wait

Ok, lets face it: I couldn’t resist to upgrade my laptop to FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE.

Now I am on the tedious task of backing up everything (CVS repository, $HOME files, /etc, /usr/local/etc and some other things…). The next step will be to re-format the HD (for taking advantage of the new ufs2 filesystem), rebuild “world” (for going to 5.3-STABLE), recompile every port used before (can’t use my old packages since they were compiled in 4.x binary format) and finally restore everything to its place.

Let’s see what happens…

About stubborness…

Last night the “casino” was open again (this time at Mau’s place).

Gil was decided to win this time, because last weekend he had no luck and lost everything (I was the lucky one). Each of us payed an entrance fee of $10 pesos to play. While some were losing and paying more money to keep playing, I luckily survived all night with the only money that I had.

Everyone lost everything. I managed to finish the game with $16 pesos and Gil won ~$200 pesos (everyone’s money). What a stubborness lesson…

A bitter day leads to therapy…

This evening I had a very frustrating moment. I’m not going to post the details, who cares anyway?

To get the evil out, I went running like a madman tonight, just to relax a bit and meditate about life. After 12 kilometers I just got tired, dehydrated and very close to completely burn my legs.

How I wish I could ran a bit more. I’m still angry and sad, better go to bed…

FreeSBIE 1.1

This morning I finished downloading an ISO image of FreeSBIE 1.1, a LiveCD based on the latest FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE.

As soon as I got it, I burned a fresh CD and booted my laptop with it. The booting process was very simple, since the included kernel has a lot of drivers compiled in it and doesn’t need any special configuration. It also auto-mounts any partitions you may have on your HD.

It comes with 2 window managers to satisfy the needs of those who want a lightweight desktop environment (FluxBox), and those who want a complete one (Xfce). Both environments have a very nice default configuration which lets you start working almost immediately.

It also includes a complete and heterogenous collection of the best open source software now available: Firefox, Thunderbird, Emacs, OpenOffice.org, Gaim, XMMS, etc., making it the ideal tool for any kind of user.

While I was playing around the system, I noticed that I finally could hear music in a decent way on my laptop. Since I have FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE installed on it, I haven’t been able to correct an issue that I reported a long time ago at the FreeBSD mailing lists. It seems that this bug has finally been corrected on the FreeBSD 5.x branch thanks to it’s ACPI compatibility.

Now I’m very motivated to upgrade my system to FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE as soon as possible. The next step will be configuring my laptop’s miniPCI wireless network adapter via the new NDIS compatibility layer and say goodbye to network cables.

I just can’t wait to put my hands to work

Talk accepted!

I’ve been informed that my proposed talk for the National Free Software Conference 2005 (CONSOL) has been accepted.

Now I must prepare the paper for being included in the proceedings as well as my slides for the talk.
