Sonic Youth concert!

Yesterday’s night was a very special one.

After 23 years, Sonic Youth finally came to México City for playing a show at the Circo Volador auditorium. We (Beto, Octavio, Fabián and me) went to see them. The show was very exciting and impressive.

Las Ultrasónicas was the opening band for the concert. We were very impressed to see this girls performing on stage, they’re really frightening… Totally undisputed attitude!

After these girls, Sonic Youth began to play. They played most of their new album’s (Sonic Nurse) songs: I Love You Golden Blue, Stones, Dude Ranch Nurse, New Hampshire, Paper Cup Exit, Pattern Recognition and also a lot of their classic songs: The Empty Page, Bull in the Heather, Mote, Drunken Butterfly, Schizophrenia, Teen Age Riot, Kool Thing, 100%, Expressway to Yr. Skull, Eric’s Trip, among others…

The concert was fscking great! These guys have the same energy as in their early days. They were bashing guitars, feedbacking the amplifiers and experimenting a lot with guitar pedals and drumsticks… Totally Sonic Youth!

They did 2 encores, and when they set off for the 2nd one, Steve Shelley threw to the audience one of the pillows of his drumkit and I was the lucky one to catch it. The best souvenir for a big fan like me!

Diarios de Motocicleta

Gael García Bernal is becoming a better actor from film to film. All I can say is that it is an excellent movie. You must see it.

These 2 guys remember me of other 2 that I know…

ProSA::Protein Sequence Analyzer

Today I’ve configured ProSA for running on my Web Site. I liked the look of the interface using my new site’s templates.

I installed the latest version (1.1) which has compatibility with Apache‘s mod_mime module. This means that the interface’s language is automatically selected depending on Web browser’s requested languages.

Enjoy!

Do you really want to climb 5.13?

As Armando refused to do a lot of moderate long routes on Bernal, we (Güero, Gina, Judith and me) had no option than to go to Jilotepec and try some hard sport routes.

5.11a, 5.11c, 5.12a were the routes that grinded our fingertips as we shamefully crawled up them. We quickly realized that we have had a lot of cardiovascular and moderate traditional speed climbing training, but zero training on crimping small overhanging slopers.

As the tour of the day went on, the same question was put on the table for several times: “Do you really want to climb 5.13?”. The answer was obvious, but taking a look at the local’s style of training, we realized that we were on the wrong training path.

In order to do it, we must bring some music, some pot, a new rope and tighter climbing shoes. Then select a route and live there all day and night on the weekends. Then memorize all the movements and perform them. Then come back and redpoint it.

So… You call this “climbing”? What a boring lifestyle is that! Definitely not convincing for the one who likes to move fast every moment…

Free Software in Bioinformatics

I’ve just sent my proposal for a talk at the National Free Software Conference 2005 (CONSOL).

I proposed to talk about the most used Free Software tools available for Bioinformatics, giving a short description of them, as well as their impact and application on life science research.

I hope the committee accepts my proposal

Our insanity never ends…

Where do we want to go?

Not satisfied from yesterday’s workout, this evening Beto and I roped for simul-climbing while doing laps on the training wall at the university campus. It got really interesting and very exhausting since a 30 meter rope produces too much rope drag on volcanic terrain. Next time I will bring a shorter rope…

Will these crazy ideas get to an end someday?

Unbelievable service!

This morning I went to renew my passport.

I’m amazed at how fast is to do the proceeding these days… On past administrations it took almost the entire day to do it, but now it just takes 1 hour from paying in the bank to receiving the new document.

Big applause for the new working scheme at this government office

Back again to training stupidity…

We haven’t climbed since sunday, so we went today to the climbing wall at the university campus.

Beto and I decided to train with mountain boots for the first lap on the wall, then on rock climbing shoes for the second lap. This kind of climbing takes more time and energy, since you have to place your feet carefully for not slipping off the wall.

Meanwhile “aunt Yola” was breaking her mind barriers. She did 3 full laps with rock climbing shoes all by herself. She couldn’t believe that she was able to achieve it, so she got a big smile

The evening was so delightful that we went for a much deserved mocha coffee at Coyoacán, then to visit Armando at the climbing shop. There we met Gina and Güero and we went to a restaurant for dinner.
